A Lady: Imagination | Dreams | Goals

When we are little we imagine different worlds, create interesting characters that we bring to life, and believe in all fairy-tales. Our imagination can take us from our bedroom to a castle in a magical forest, or to a secret garden with talking animals, or even to fairy-tale weddings and families as we play house. As we grow up a little and realize that there are parameters separating what we can imagine and what we can accomplish, we begin to dream.

We are told to follow our dreams. We take the imagination given to us as a child and morph it into a somewhat attainable dream. Our dreams stray from our imagination in that we start to piece together reality and the imaginative and narrow down what we truly want in our real life. A dream is something that we throw hope into and wish that we could become that. A dream is centered around our reality, but it is the best reality we can picture. As we continue to grow and mature we make the distinction from dream to goal.

A goal is the strategic analysis of a dream. A Lady should always be goal oriented - this is what keeps you focused and driven to become the greatest you you can be. This strategic analysis of the dreams, that are initially created by the childlike imagination, is what drives success and fulfillment in our adult lives. If we can find a way to create a pathway to our innate aspirations, then we can gain a well rounded perspective of ourselves and our surroundings and be able to find confidence in who we are, where we belong, and what our purpose is. The discovery of finding yourself begins with the ideas from your imagination, sorting the attainable through your dreams and creating a strategy to reach your goals. As a Lady it is essential to take the time to identify who you are and what you believe in. Confidence, sense of self and goal driven attributes are what we see in iconic Ladies that captivates us and forces us to admire them. Be admired, be captivating, be a Lady.

A Lady Knows The Difference Between Style & Fashion

A Lady is cognizant of the difference between Fashion and Style and is able to be creative and self expressive with both aspects of the art. Style is the knowledge of fit, tailoring, quality of garment, and classic polishing. Staying within the boundaries of style will never lead you astray, for it is timeless and neat. Style is part of who you are - it is the cut that fits you best, the color that suits you best and it is the collection of pieces you will love forever, that will in turn love you back forever. Fashion, on the other hand is something entirely different. Fashion is the statement. Fashion is the tool we use to make our style our own. Picture a coloring book; style is equivalent to the beautiful sketches within, clean and pretty, but fashion is the work of art produced after you have filled in the pages with color and personal touches. With fashion you can be daring and over the top creative. You don't have to stay within the boundaries, and your taste can change daily. Your style is your comfort blanket and you should never leave those principles behind. The fusion of style and fashion are what create an icon, where if you disregard the style rules you lean toward simply being a hot mess of abstract art.

One of my favorite examples of this meshing of style and fashion is Anna Dello Russo. She is unafraid of out there fashion extremes, yet she also knows just how to wear the simple dress. For daily life, she may not be your source of inspiration, but admiring her ensembles is like admiring a masterpiece hanging in a museum. Pure inspiration.

A Lady Uses Her Words

To be a true Lady is to be articulate and kind. A Lady uses her words carefully both simply in her conversations as well as within her relationships. I use this point in two ways.

First, a Lady always thinks before she speaks. Think about what it is that you are trying to say and what the best way to get your point across eloquently may be. Reading and catching words that mentors of yours utilize is the best way to expand your vocabulary. Your words can express so much more than simply the truest meaning of them - they are part of your personality. Think of Lady of icons of the past and the words that they chose. Examples include Audrey Hepburn using darling or lovely. The use of beautiful adjectives and out of the ordinary vocabulary can truly make you stand out.

The second point I wish to make with this topic is to use your words within your relationships carefully. Be honest with those you care about, express your feelings through well thought out and appropriate language. It means so much more when you have thought about someone and truly deciphered what would stand out to them. Telling a friend you are proud of them. Expressing to a loved one that you care for them and support them. Telling someone you love them. These are all expressions which can be taken to heart and make someone's day. Sincerity and kindness can go so far with a friend, spouse, family member or even in a new meeting.

A Lady Prepares

It's a touch cooler tonight in Nashville, and the stores are beginning to bring in some of their fall pieces. I am excited for fall, though I hate saying goodbye to my beloved summer. Fall means scarves, hot coffee, warm sweaters, and beautiful Tennessee trees turning burnt orange and red. I have already begun to prepare by adding these wonderful items to my small closet.

This is my new favorite faux fur vest from Posh. I can't wait to wear this out coupled with the jeans below and a studded belt.

I found these jeans at H. Audrey - they are Helmut Lang. A perfect staple skinny jean.

A Lady loves New Things

It has been quite some time since my last post, so I thought today I would post some of my favorite new pieces. My great friends Kyah and Jessica have created the most amazing line of leather goods and unique jewelry. Their line is called sleeveless - you can check them out at www.wearsleeveless.com. I was lucky enough to snag one of the blush colored hook bracelets from them.

The detailing and the craftsmanship speaks for itself, but the element of cool that comes with ownership of one of these unique pieces is priceless.

Another great find of mine recently was these Aldo booties. I am absolutely in love and have been wearing them nonstop since I purchased them. They are perfect with a mini-dress or skinny jeans. They are trendy and fun, but still sleek.

And last, but definitely not least, my beloved Chanel sunglasses. Anyone who knows me and my brand knows that I adore bows. I think they are classic and beautiful and I couldn't love them more.

It is a Lady's prerogative to seek out wonderful treasures that make her smile, and these are a few of mine. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and that my finds will inspire you.

A Lady Gets Personal

For those who do not know, my husband plays baseball for a living, which means he is gone from February until September. I live in Nashville and he currently lives in Maryland for the season. He is unable to travel back home during the season, so I fly to him each month. Though this is very difficult for us, we make it work. The absence of my other half truly does make our relationship stronger when we do get to see each other, for we really take in those moments and appreciate each others presence. People often ask, "How do you do that? Isn't it lonely?" Yes, it is very lonely, but I surround myself with wonderful people that help me get through the lonely times, and help build me as an individual so that when I do see Brett I am a better person. It is imperative that I grow as a person in all aspects, my work, spiritually, my self confidence, and in my ability to build relationships with others, so that when we do come together I can offer him the best version of myself. It is utterly important that the people I am around are part of this journey to grow so that I never become stagnant or content in the self I am now, but ever wish to become a stronger, wiser, fuller Sierra.

As I build my life here in Nashville I am strong in simply having to have a phone based relationship with my husband and simply hold onto the moments that I have with him each month, but I do believe that the hardest part of being separate is just not having my "person" with me. The person who I can rely on to understand my jokes, and my stories. The person that can make me feel comfortable, no matter the situation, with just a look or a touch. That is what I miss the most. Those who know me know that I am not a hugger or touchy person, but when I am without my half I realize that this is what I miss most. Holding hands, a hug during the day, the hand on my back when I walk into a new place, just the comfort of knowing someone is there for me.

My thought for you today, with this personal and sappy entry, is to appreciate the people around you. Become someone's "person" so that they may have a brighter more confident day because you are there. Let the people around you know that you care and support them in all that they do and that you will be with them as they grow as an individual. This in turn will only help you to become that better half that you wish to be with your significant other. If we all come together to build each other up we will be rewarded in the most precious way, in love and respect in all of our relationships.

A Lady Juggles

In today's society, with the concept of always being available whether it be by email or social networking or consistent communication via your iphone, it is easy to feel that you are always juggling a thousand and one things all at one time. This burden of consistently remaining available to everyone and always sharing yourself with those around you and those in your extended internet network is difficult for a Lady to handle with grace at times. A Lady is able to juggle, but also knows when it is time to let a couple of those batons fall. For instance, at dinner. When a Lady is among friends conversing and laughing and building relationships, this is not a time for iphone texting and updating social networks. Be in the moment. Appreciate the real, in flesh people you have around you instead of worrying so much about those who simply reside in tech-world. There is a time to be crazy and emailing and texting and making sure everything is taken care that needs to be, and then there is a time to sit, take a breath and realize that you have wonderful people in your life that you can learn from and be inspired by. A Lady will miss out on so much if she is constantly blinded by the semi-real relationships she holds through her computer and cell phone. Take a step back and remember to embrace the people in front of you. The times when you put a hold on google information and texting, and simply take that moment to shut out the noise and perk up your ears to the world right in front of you, are the times that you remember and cherish the most. It is important to take time to reflect on the past, become eager for the future, and be present in the now, and none of these important reflections require an iPhone.

A Lady Appreciates The Little Things

Though it is easy to show gratitude for the major kindnesses shown to you, it is equally important to be appreciative of the little things you encounter as well. The other day I received a card in the mail from a wonderful friend. Just the small gesture showing that someone out there was thinking of me was beyond touching. Something such as a written letter, a simple text to say hello, or an unexpected statement of how much someone means to you can make all the difference in a relationship of any sort. I have found myself noticing and becoming more appreciative of these little gestures, for there is nothing provoked or expected and they therefore make quite an impact. I can't remember who said it, but it is a common quote used, "We remember moments, not days" and I truly believe that small kindnesses make an ordinary moment in a day an extraordinary moment in our lives. I challenge you to show one small act of kindness towards someone you care about today. You're niceness in one single moment can make for a memory that one person can cherish for many days to come.

A Lady is Confident

One of the most obvious traits that an iconic Lady holds is also one of the most difficult to adopt; Confidence. Confidence is exuded through every comment, action, and the simple presence of a true Lady. Confidence in her decisions, in her style, in her relationships, and most importantly just in herself. The way a Lady stands shows confidence. The way a Lady speaks and addresses others shows confidence. It is easy to say that a Lady needs to be confident, but it is quite another to actually explore how and in what areas confidence truly is seen. I have been thinking about this for sometime now, and I have identified a few points that I believe to be helpful in my daily struggle to be confident with myself.

The first point is to be confident in your decisions. Think about what it is that you want, what is the best for the situation, weigh the options carefully and then decide. The next step is to stand behind your decision. Be confident you made the right choice with the information you had been given. Though you may see a different option as a better one in hindsight, know that you made the right choice with the perspective you had and do not waiver from your stance.

This goes into point number two.
Be confident that you can grow from your mistakes and not dwell in them. A mistake is merely an opportunity to do something a different way- an opportunity to grow. A mistake is not a failure, it is just a lesson. This is how you learn. If you make a decision, be confident in it, and if it is the wrong decision, be confident that you are able to grow from that and not dwell in the upset of the mistake. Strength comes from what you make of a situation and what you take away from the experience, only smugness and a blinder for learning can come from consistent rightness. Be willing to try knowing you may make a mistake, but be just as willing to own your mistake and learn from it.

Point number three, be confident in your conversations with others. Have a point of view and share it. You are the only one with your perspective and your experience, so share it and believe in it. Do not let the opinion of others affect your level of confidence in yourself and your point of view. Think about what you say and be confident in your delivery. A Lady is eloquent and articulate and is able to carry herself as a Lady no matter who surrounds her.

The last point that I have to give is to be confident in your style. If you are in a situation where you don't know what to say, and you don't know what to do you can always stand out through style. Being confident in your attire and being appropriately dressed for any occasion gives you automatic poise and emanates confidence. Stand up straight, keep your head up, don't fidget, and make your presence known. A Lady is always a Lady, no mistake in judgement, different perspective, nor a bad hair day can strip the elegance and confidence from a Lady, for the true essence of a Lady comes from inside and is an impossible radiance to squander.

A Lady And Her Cuisine

Until recently I never understood the art of cooking. To me, it seemed almost an unappreciated waste of time, for one can spend hours preparing an amazing meal and within a matter of minutes the entire thing is devoured bite by bite, and you have nothing to show for your work. However, I have had a revelation. I now understand the almost romantic aspect of it all. It is not about the actual taste, well not entirely, it is about the sensory relationship developed while cooking the meal, the conversations and relationships built while eating the meal, and the satisfaction of providing a platform in which friendships grow stronger and memories are made. Cooking is about creating an experience that will forever be remembered, even if the actual dish is not.

A Lady Converses

A Lady truly understands and enjoys the art of conversation. Too often in today's society we have pulled away from the pure entertainment of conversing with a friend. We text, email, watch television, facebook and twitter each other, but rarely do we simply sit and talk to one another. I dearly love each of my friends for different reasons special to their personality, but one common thread is that I can easily communicate with them. I am one to become easily bored in a non-conversationally stimulating setting, and therefore I treasure my friends' ability to converse with wit and wisdom. I believe in a previous post I discussed how a Lady loves to continually learn and be challenged, well, engaging conversation is absolutely the best way to do so. When a Lady stops and listens to a friend and then ponders an adequate and intelligent response, tagged along with a little satire or humor, the whole process is exceptionally academic and very entertaining. Not only does a Lady learn so much from listening to those around her, but she also learns much about herself through her responses and observations. This entire process is one in which I truly enjoy and wish to encounter more of. I hope that this beautiful friday brings you much intelligent, stimulating and interesting conversation with those around you.

A Lady Is Wise

A Lady maintains an appropriate, calm perspective on situations and does not panic or become easily overwhelmed by them. A Lady is aware that successful people are those who do not let other people, nor precarious situations dictate who they are or how they respond. They carry themselves with confidence and approach situations and relationships with an open mind, while still holding strong to her personal beliefs. A Lady knows who she is, where she is headed and what learning and growth she has in store for her future. A Lady knows that you can always grow wiser and learn more, but that the foundation of morals and values is the starting point from which all else centers around; therefore, a Lady must be well established in those morals and values and falter little from them on her journey.

This is not to say that a Lady does not make mistakes, but she knows when to take responsibility and how to move on with a head held high, and a desire to not repeat the same mistake. A Lady knows who she is - she allows others to inspire her, but not define her. A Lady knows that this is a journey and accepts that perfection is an unreachable ideal, not a destination.

A Lady Seeks A Gentleman

A Lady should always seek out a gentleman. A man that will stand by her, motivate, challenge, and inspire her. A Lady should find a man that she can grow with, who she respects and who she admires. A Lady should seek love, rather than lust; romance, rather than the easy road; and a man with a heart on the same pathway as her own. A relationship means communicating together, learning together, growing together, falling down together and emerging together as better, wiser, stronger partners.

The words a Lady wants to hear most are "I love you" and the words a gentleman wants to hear most are "I respect you", and as a couple, these two phrases need to be made clear and need to be upheld each day.

A Lady never settles. Every lady deserves to love and to be loved to the fullest potential. It is a true gift to find the person that you are, without a doubt, meant to be with, and everyone deserves that stability and that blessing. One of my favorite chapters in the Bible is 1 Corinthians 13 - the chapter on love. It is said "And these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

A Lady Seeks Out Music

A Lady should always seek out new things she enjoys, whether that be new experiences, new relationships, new projects or even new music. A Lady should never stop learning and desiring new information; it is what makes us grow and become inspiring, interesting role models for others. One new aspect that I have come across, basically in the last couple years, is indie music. I find that there is so much music out there that is just ready to be enjoyed by the wandering and discovering soul. I had the wonderful opportunity to watch Karen Elson perform her first show promoting her first album here in Nashville at The Basement. Wow. I was so impressed. To be honest I went into the experience with little expectation, I mean this is Nashville and we are hard to please, but I cannot tell you how pleasant the entire experience was. Her voice, her demeanor, and her wonderful personality all came through and I really found a new favorite. Please check out her new album, I'm sure it will be fantastic, as is Mrs. Karen Elson.

A Lady Travels

A Lady should always travel in style, for you are traveling to greet someone special therefore you should arrive with attire that is special. Arriving to see someone you have been apart from, whether it be a husband, mother, friend or business partner, should be an occurrence withstanding a first impression, and a Lady always wishes to make a wonderful and memorable first impression.

I recently embarked on a trip to Sarasota Florida to visit my husband, for which I obviously had to fly. To the airport I wore fitted, dark wash, cuffed, straight leg Joes jeans, a white tank, a heather grey tulle detailed sweater fancied with pink pearls and my adored pink Christian Louboutin Mary-Janes. I felt it was the most appropriate ensemble considering I would be flying, but I had not seen the husband in a month. Whilst seated at my gate I watched all the people dressed in sweats, track suits, even pajamas and I thought of this little reminder- The airport is no place for sad, style excuses. A Lady should always be prepared for the day, especially (most especially) when said Lady is visiting someone. So, a Lady travels in style.

A Lady Gets Dressed

It is of utmost importance to be dressed for the day. This has always been my rule. You never know what the day has in store, so it is appropriate to always be prepared. If ever I am asked why I am dressed up so, my response tends to be, "well, I am dressed for the day." My friend Rachel always teases me for this response, for it is true that I personify the day as if it has any sort of opinion; in my eyes, it does. Who knows what each days holds for us, I hope to simply be the best dressed as I meet my destiny. Who wouldn't wish the same?

I believe the Lady Coco Chanel summarizes this point eloquently and adequately, "I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little - if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.”

A Lady Knows Quality

So much like many of you, I tuned into 'The Real Housewives of Orange County' on Bravo. I consider all the Real Housewives series' one of my guilty pleasures. One thing that I took immediate notice of, throughout the Orange Country wives series specifically, was their lack of knowledge in terms of quality of the expensive clothes they purchased. Much of what they wore was expensive I'm sure, but appeared to be something purchased from a cheap teenage store; example: Forever 21.

They speak of their monetary status often, so I'm sure it was anything but economical, but it all looks cheap. A lady knows how to spend her money on items that mean something, not just for the designer label. It would be my assumption that designers must make certain novelty items for the fashionably uneducated, for the designers know they can trick them into buying the items solely for the appearance of status. A real lady understands that the reason for designer labels is for the quality more-so than the status. If you are going to spend the money, be sure to fall in love with the piece you are buying. Have reason and purpose behind your decisions. Admire the construction, be inspired by the silhouette, or seek out luxurious fabrics. Spend the extra money on classic items, and seek out the cheaper options on the more trendy items that might not make it to next season. Remember style is key and educating oneself is the first step.

There are a few things that must go on the wish list of a lady. You should keep a list of the items you keep your eye on for the future. I have had my list for a long while, and anytime I am able to accent that list with a check mark, I am elated. This list keeps me on track and keeps my desires to a classic minimum. It is key to remember that Fashion is about fun and art and about making a statement, and style is about the perfect fit, and what is flattering on you specifically. There is a large place in my heart for fashion, but style becomes part of you. Fashion is fleeting, but style is embedded within. Here are some of the pieces that have made it to my Lady wish list:

Hello,

Thank you so much for taking a glance at my blog. My goal is to observe and discover what makes a lady. My definition of a lady is a woman who admires style and not just fashion, one who seeks out the best in people, specifically in gentlemen, and one who looks to better the world around her. The best symbol of a lady I can think of is Audrey Hepburn. Audrey has been my inspiration forever and it is my goal to have the same class, grace and elegance she so effortlessly exuded.
